Is anyone every heard of taking effexor and wellbutrin together and if they have how did it work
I've been taking both Wellbutrin 150XL & Effexor 75. I do not like this combo my Dr prescribed, better depression but major anxiety & rage issues. Never had this much anxiety, nervy feelings, very bad!! Do not do this if you have any type of irritability. good luck
You did not say if a doctor prescribed this combination or if u r just wondering if it would work. I am not a doctor but I can tell u about my experience with them. I took Effexor for a few years & my doctor had already increased the dosage to two per day & it did not seem to be working anymore so he prescribed Wellbutrin in addition to the Effexor. After about a week I felt like it was helping but then after two weeks I started feeling ''blurry if that makes any sense. I started feeling self-conscious & my vision was not clear. That was the first time I ever had an anti-depressant make me feel ''medicated''. It felt bad. I stopped the Wellbutrin immediately, but not the Effexor & then I changed doctors. I had to stop taking the Effexor a little at a time. I now take Cymbalta & feel completely normal again. Please do not ever try combining drugs on ur own. Hope this helps.
In the 1980s, Prozac was introduced, the first serotonin-based anti-depressive medicine. It seemed to improve the mood of many people with depression. Effexor works like Prozac - it boosts the level of serotonin in the body, but it has *slightly* different side effects.
Wellbutrin is a related medicine, which works primarily on dopamine. Unlike the serotonin antidepressants, Wellbutrin does not depress ur sex drive - assuming that u even have one, being depressed. On the other hand, Wellbutrin can cause seizures in people predisposed to them.
Both serotonin & dopamine r neurotransmitters, & both of the drugs have similar effects.
Our bodies r very versatile, & if you're short of one neurotransmitter, another neurotransmitter usually can ''pinch hit''. Thus, it is likely that u would respond well to *either* of the drugs, or not respond to either one. The reason for giving u both drugs is that u can get a lower dose of each. That way, u r less likely to have the side effects of either.
There r a number of other problems which these drugs r being prescribed, not just depression, but anxiety, etc. Am I out of line for assuming that u have depression?
Some people have depression because of certain stressors, such as a parent dying, having a business failure, divorce, etc. These people generally have some relief from medicines of this sort, but it is sorta like treating a cold. (''If u get rest & fluids, u can get rid of a cold in 14 days, but if u don't, it may hang around for two weeks.'') These people generally do not commit suicide. These people also tend to benefit from ''talk therapy''.
Other ''hard-core depressive'' people seem to have a pervasive depression that follows them all their life. These people tend to get limited help from any medicine, & limited help from talking to a psychotherapist. And these people do not attempt suicide ''to attract attention''. They try to kill themselves because the pain of their existance seems unbearable.
There is a warning on all the modern antidepressants that the risk of suicide is heightened. I've heard it explained that when they take the medicine, a hard-core depressive mood & energy level rises temporarily, & he finally has the ability to kill himself, something he is wanted to do for a long time, but been unable to actually do. (It is NOT easy to kill yourself without endangering other people, a condition most suicides consider important.)
So it is a good idea to take the meds together, but it is because u have fewer side effects, not necessarily because they work better together.
I wish u the best. One of the symptoms of depression is anhedonia - the inability to enjoy yourself. You can not see it, but many people care about you. I want u to survive this.
Yes, I have a friend who has taken them both at the same time. She suffers from major depression. They work on different neurotransmitters. I berlieve Wellbutrin is thought to work on norepinephrine and Effexor on dopamine and serotonin. I have taken both myself, though not simultaneously. The side effects are different, too.
